 Must knows.

  • Backflow is the unintended reversal of water flow in your plumbing caused by backsiphonage (pressure drop in the water main) or back-pressure (downstream pressure pushing back). It can pull contaminants into the drinking-water system, so the CRD runs a Cross-Connection Control program to prevent it.

  • Any property owner (homeowner, strata, commercial operator, institutional facility) within the CRD water service area who has a cross-connection (for example: irrigation system, fire-sprinkler system, boiler, chemical-injection system) must have an assembly installed, registered in the CRD’s Cross Connection Control (CCC) Portal, and maintained/tested by a certified tester

    • Residential irrigation systems (no chemical injection): every three years (tri-annually).

    • All other backflow assemblies on residential properties: annually.

    • Commercial/industrial/institutional sites (including fire systems, boilers, dishwashers, labs, etc.): annually.

  • Installations should be done only by certified plumbers (permit required). Testing must be performed by certified backflow assembly testers using currently calibrated test gauges that meet CRD requirements.

    • Begin by emailing the CRD with your details, The CRD will set up your profile in the portal.

    • Log into the portal and register each backflow prevention assembly installed on your property. Assign the certified tester (Tubman Plumbing Ltd) who will perform the inspection and testing.

    • After the certified tester completes the test, they upload the test result directly via the portal. You can then monitor the status of your devices (registered, passed, failed, due for test) online at any time.

    • For future tests: When an upcoming annual (or tri-annual) test is due, the portal will show the device is “due”, so you can schedule a certified tester early and upload results on time — helps avoid non-compliance fees or service interruptions.

  • Backflow assemblies are mechanical and can fail due to wear, corrosion, freezing, or water conditions. Annual (or tri-annual, for res. irrigation) testing confirms they operate as designed to prevent contaminants from entering the drinking-water system; your tester performs standardized checks and files results with the CRD (via the portal).
